Parenting and discipline decisions are actually not about your child. They’re decisions about what kind of person you want to be.
If you want to be a loving, kind parent, practice making parenting and discipline decisions that are loving and kind, even though limits still need to be made.
If you want to be a compassionate, gentle parent, practice making parenting and discipline decisions that are compassionate and gentle, even though limits still need to be made.
If you want to be a strict, direct parent, you know what to do.
Who do you want to be?
Be that parent, regardless of the kids. They can’t make you do anything you don’t want to do.
PS – A reminder: this is some tough advice this week. But with practice it will help you lighten the load. It’s about being clear with the kids: “No matter what you do, I’m going to do my best to be a loving parent. But we still need to do what’s right. Let’s work together on this.”
